Discover, explore and savour the best of Sussex

Sussex Follies, festivals and flea markets!

Welcome to the Sussex Exclusive newsletter. This week it’s a veritable whirlwind of strange things!

In celebration of Sussex Day, this week we bring you an eclectic combination of curiosities, puddings and some fantastic festivals.

It all started with a jaunt to Batemans in East Sussex when, distracted by the sight of a giant, stone sugar loaf, I decided to hunt down Mad Jack’s follies. That in turn somehow led to a trip to Lewes on the pretext of visiting the castle (wow, that’s some view from the top – you’ll find a few photos on our Facebook page) but ended up with a dalliance in the magnificent Lewes flea market! I don’t really know how that happened but do read on to learn more.

With our first Sussex summer festival kicking off this weekend at Pippingford Park, it also seemed apt to bring you the last of our festival series which includes five more diverse and intriguing events: think music, retro, boats, Gyles Brandreth and bandstands! It’s definitely an unusual mix.

Finally, in honour of both Sussex Day and World Gin Day, I thought you might like to try an adaptation of a traditional Summer Pudding recipe (no surprise that it involves adding gin). The colours and flavours are amazing, it’s just a shame the sun seems to have temporarily deserted us for now!

That’s it for now, have a great weekend.
