Stand Up Comedy in Sussex

This event may be over, but if you’re looking for more stand up comedy in Sussex, check out: Funny That!

A little while ago, I found myself in a marquee in the grounds of The Hassocks Hotel (which, unsurprisingly you’ll find in Hassocks near the station). The event was a Funny That comedy night with a stellar line up of comedians which included Milton Jones as the headline act. It was a great night with easy parking and none of the hassle of getting into a central city location and I instantly wanted more!

Outside the box

Funny That Comedy is the brainchild of comedian Stephen Grant. Stephen is the host of the Krater Comedy Club at Komedia in Brighton, which has won Best Comedy Venue in the South a number of times and he is a regular headliner at The Comedy Store in Leicester Square. He’s also won Best UK Compere more than once. Like many performers, when Covid shut most venues and events down, he had to start thinking outside the box or rather just outside, and the idea behind the Funny That events was born. Sort of pop-up comedy if you will.

The event I went to was the last in a run of comedy nights, and Stephen explained that they have to plan the events around the everchanging Covid restrictions. and although those restrictions are easing, for event planners the complications are still many!

Your next Funny That event is …

Sussex Comedy

But the good news is that the next Funny That Comdey event has just been announced and will be presented by Joanne McNally with Daliso Chaponda and Stephen Grant. It will be held at The Horse Inn in Hurst, Hurstpierpoint, West Sussex in advance of Joanne’s sell-out run at the London Palladium. Described by the Sunday Times as a “truly gifted stand-up”, Joanne has been taking the UK and Irish comedy scene by storm with sell-out tours, hilarious chat show appearances, newspaper articles and a hit documentary all under her belt. Joanne has numerous TV credits include co-hosting RTÉ 2’s flagship comedy show Republic of Telly. She is also the co-presenter with Vogue Williams of hit podcast “My Therapist Ghosted Me”.

Daliso Chaponda has appeared on The Royal Variety Performance 2020 (ITV), Britain’s Got Talent (ITV), Britain’s Got Talent Champions (ITV), QI (BBC2) and much more and with award-winning MC Stephen Grant, it’s set to be another great night.
