Discover, explore and savour the best of Sussex

Sussex Specialities: Parham, Jammy Sours, Morris dancers and canals!

Welcome to this week’s newsletter and our taste of some Sussex specialities.

Having spent last Saturday in horizontal rain on the South Downs watching a ploughing match, this week I was keen to find something a little less tempestuous! So dodging the rain where I could, I set off around the county to see what’s afoot.

For something soothing and cerebral, I can’t recommend Parham House enough as you step back in time and listen out for the rustling of an Elizabethan skirt in the Great Hall or Long Gallery. But if you prefer your social history served as a more active dish with a side helping of folklore, then you have to search out your local Morris dancing side. There are Morris dancers all across Sussex and for my part, I plan on spending next weekend at a Morris dancing conker festival!

As you can imagine, all this exploring builds up a thirst, and I am never more happy than when in the arms of a Sussex craft drink. So happy days it was indeed to stumble upon the Spirit of the Downs grape spirit – put aside any memories of throat burning French-style eau de vie, and try this local Vodka alternative in a Jammy Sour cocktail.

Finally, to finish this week’s adventures, how about a soothing boat trip along the Wey and Arun Canal or a walk along the towpath? Starting near Loxwood, what a wonderful way to let go of the pressures of the week and enjoy some of our Sussex flora and fauna.

That’s it from me. I’m off to Hastings this weekend and immersing myself in thoughts of Christmas as we prepare our Christmas magazine. Have a good one.
