Sussex is rich in Medieval history, with some fantastic Medieval castles, villages and attractions all worth a visit. But if you love nothing better than to immerse yourself in a moment in time, then try one of these five Medieval events in Sussex.

Arundel Medieval Festival
For the Medieval history fan, the year kicks off in April at Arundel Castle. This Medieval Festival is an immersive experience that takes visitors back to the year 1214. It’s set on the castle’s lower lawns and includes a Medieval encampment, with the sights, sounds and excitement of the 13th century.

Run over three days, there are battle reenactments, falconry and archery along with Medieval music and Medieval-inspired dishes. Visit Arundel Castle website for full details.

Battle of Lewes Festival
This free event takes place in Lewes in May and marks the battle between King Henry III and Prince Edward, and the rebel Simon de Montfort and his barons that took place in 1264. The streets of Lewes become the scene of the battle reenactment.

Spread across two days, there is a full Medieval camp, combat displays and activities at The Convent Field and the Priory including archery, 13th century jousting, falconry and catapults. There is also a Medieval trading village as well as Medieval entertainment. For more information: Battle of Lewes

Loxwood Joust
Perhaps the largest of the Medieval events in Sussex, Loxwood Joust is held over three weekends in August. There are jousting tournaments, combat displays, falconry and living history exhibits. There is also a Medieval marketplace, a Medieval feast and Medieval taverns.

Loxwood Joust describes itself as “a journey to a world of knights, royalty, and epic tales”. You’ll find yourself brushing shoulders with Medieval characters or visiting the Enchanted Woodland for workshops, live performances and storytelling.

England’s Medieval Festival, Pippingford Park
Held over three days at at King’s Grove – an historic royal location where kings, nobility and invited guests once came to hunt and train for war. This is the largest Medieval themed festival in the UK and you can expect jousting, battles and artillery displays, falconry craftsmen and traders, minstrels, magicians, jesters, mead and Medieval style food. For more information visit: the England’s Medieval Festival website.

Battle of Hastings
The Battle of Hastings was, of course, a pivotal moment in the history of Sussex and its enactment is the last of the big Medieval events in Sussex of the year. Held in October at Battle Abbey, on the spot where King Harold and William fought in 1066, expect over 300 reenactors as well as the encampments of both armies. Meet Saxon and Norman soldiers, experience their weapons and armour, the food they ate, and watch them practise their 11th century skills and craftsmanship. There is falconry, a market, storytelling and archery. Visit the English Heritage website for more information.
