Whether you want to enjoy a crisp winter’s morning with hoar frosts and blue skies or to blow away a few cobwebs, here are seven Sussex winter walks for a bit of a leg stretch.

Romans and charcoalers 12 km West Sussex walk
This 12 km West Sussex walk makes our winter list because it’s packed with atmosphere (and there is also a jolly good pub on route). It’s a great walk for spring too and takes you via great views and along woodland paths.
Duncton Hill and Stickingspit 7.5 km West Sussex walk
Another absolute belter of a walk that has fantastic views, lots of wildlife and woodland paths. On a cold and fresh day, it’s a great way to explore a small section of the South Downs.
The 11 km Singleton / South Downs Circuit, West Sussex
Another walk that is great at any time of the year, but in winter it feels wild and untamed as you climb the Downs at Levin Down and walk through forests on the West Dean Estate.
Gog and Magog 5 km walk at Petworth, West Sussex
This shorter walk has loads of interest along the way and don’t forget to stop and look back at Petworth when you’ve climbed the hill at Shimmings Valley.
16 km Rodmell to Lewes Loop, East Sussex
I got in a lot of trouble when I first did this walk, as I mistakenly estimated it to be 8 km. It was worth the mistake as there are fabulous views from the Downs and a return walk via the river.
A quick and easy woodland walk at Laughton
I did this walk in the summer, but with a well-made-up path, it would equally make a very doable and fairly short winter walk.
An easier 3 km walk at Arlington, East Sussex
Most (but not quite all) of this walk is on well well-maintained track. You don’t have to go all the way around the reservoir if you don’t fancy it but look out for the Long Man in the distance.
