Arundel is quite the quintessential Medieval English market town. Nestled in the rolling hills of the South Downs and just a stone’s throw away from the coast, Arundel in spring is the perfect place for a visit in a season of renewal and growth. Whether it is the peaceful countryside, with a meandering river, lined with lush greenery and wildlife, or the beach, with the soothing sound of the waves lapping the shore, Arundel and its surrounds can offer you an enchanting mix of contrasts.

Bluebell Woods
There is nothing more delightful than going for a walk in the woods when the bluebells are in season mid-April to end May, with dappled sunlight, birdsong and the rustling of the trees. If you are lucky, you might even spot some deer! Lower Wepham Woods, The Dover (Slindon Estate) and Clapham Woods are great places to go bluebell hunting. End your walk at one of the numerous country pubs.

Swanbourne Lake
Take a peaceful stroll from Arundel town centre down to Swanbourne Lake and to say hello to the ducklings and signets. Feed the ducks and swans at the lake. You can continue your walk around Swanbourne Lake, pop into the café for a replenishing bite, or rent one of their rowing boats, which can be hired online or at the door.

Arundel Wetland Trust
In spring, the 65 acres of wetlands are a hive of activity, so there will be plenty for you to enjoy. Check out their website, as they update it regularly with the latest sightings of birds. There are boat safaris, diving duck feeding/talks and pelican cove/keeper talks happening. If you are feeling artistic, there are numerous wood carving workshops happening throughout March, April and May. Check out their website for more information.

Paddleboarding/Kayaking
The river Arun is a great place for paddleboarders and kayakers. You can launch and recover your equipment at the pontoon beside Queens Road Bridge, with the permission of the café that runs it, or at the riverbank by the Black Rabbit pub, again with their permission. There are several companies that offer rental including Pulborough Paddles or guided tours and lessons (e.g. Fluid Adventures, Surfs Sups Watersports). Littlehampton-Arundel is one of the most popular stretches of the river as it takes you through beautiful countryside. Just be aware that river Arun is the second fastest flowing tidal river in the UK, so do not attempt paddleboarding/kayaking alone if you are a complete novice.

Tulip Festival
This is an annual springtime celebration held at Arundel Castle where visitors can enjoy a riotous display of stunning colour consisting of over 100,000 tulips. These vibrant flowers are set against the breathtaking backdrop of the castle and can be enjoyed from April.

Easter Medieval Festival
This three-day event is held over the Easter bank holiday at the castle and will feature 13th century combat, archery, falconry, music, food and drinks. There will be an opportunity to practice your skills at axe-throwing, archery, artillery and crafts. Perfect for the whole family.

Allium Extravaganza
If you missed out on the Tulip Festival in April, then why not come along to the Allium Extravaganza in May. Known as ‘the fireworks of gardening’, thousands of impressive alliums will come into bloom on the castle grounds.

Foraging
Springtime is the perfect time to look for wild garlic that grows in the woods, but why not book-in to one of the numerous foraging workshops organized locally? Slow-down, connect with ourselves and nature, learn some ancient knowledge about the plants that grow in our local woodland. Forage and Feast is running an event locally on 12th April at the Whiteways takeaway kiosk in Houghton, where you get to forage and cook your find.

Antique foraging
There are numerous antique shops in Arundel, come and discover hidden gems and lost treasures of bygone eras. If you want some guidance and to learn tricks of the trade, then why not book in a tour with Sarah, of Foraging for Antiques, for an antique treasure hunt in Arundel.

Trout Fishing
Have a go trout fishing at the local Chalk Springs trout fishery. There are four beautiful lakes, fed by natural chalk springs, with crystal clear water. Private tuition can be organised if this is your first time fly fishing.

Learn to kitesurf and windsurf
The Beach Watersports, 15 minute drive away is the perfect place to learn how to kitesurf, windsurf, wing-foil or simply paddleboard. There are changing rooms, hot showers and they run classes for kids too!
