It’s all going on this weekend!
It won’t have escaped your notice that over the last 18 months, I have been a little obsessed with 1066. That is not just because the Bayeux Tapestry has arrived in London, but because on 14 October 2026, it will be 960 years since the Battle of Hastings, and in 2027, Europe will celebrate 1,000 years since William’s birth with the Millennium Year of the Normans. As a result, I’ve been on a deep 1066 dive and have put together a full and fascinating SE 1066 trail. You can dip into it, do it in sections, or go big and do the whole thing; it’s up to you, but if there is one takeaway from my adventures, it is that nothing really beats that sense of connection you get when you visit the actual places involved. Oh, and don’t forget there is a big re-enactment taking place at Battle this weekend.
By a strange twist of timing, 14 October 2026 is also a special Winnie the Pooh anniversary, namely 100 years since the Pooh books were first published. And searching for Pooh and his friends on Ashdown Forest is a wonderful way to spend a morning! With lunch at The Bear Inn in Hartfield, perhaps.
If none of that floats your boat, well then, why not explore Bexhill, one bite at a time or just stay put on the sofa and enjoy a little bit of Sussex adventure from the comfort of your own home?
Finally, this week a new adventure begins, and I will be doing the first in a series of walks across Sussex as I retrace the footsteps of Hilaire Belloc and revisit some of the issues he raised in his famous book. On this first section, I will be joined by two fascinating women, and I can’t wait to share how we get on. This section is Robertsbridge to Old Heathfield.
That’s it for now. Have a great weekend.
