Stay at East Beach House, Littlehampton

Littlehampton is a great spot for some time away from it all. Not far from bustling Brighton, historic Arundel and the achingly beautiful South Downs, it also happens to have an award-winning sandy beach, a fabulous promenade and an attractive harbour. And right in the heart of this busy little town, a pebble’s throw from the beach, is East Beach House.

A room with a view

East Beach House is a beautifully preserved Victorian property and nine-room boutique guesthouse. It’s super stylish, has recently been completely refurbished and blends period character with modern comfort. You can wake up to the sound of the sea and enjoy a friendly welcome and lots of little personal touches. It’s dog-friendly and also has a guest lounge with sea views. The team provide lots of helpful recommendations and even post the tide times daily to help plan seaside walks

A little history

East Beach House was built in 1890 (so it is actually older than the remodelled parts of Arundel Castle), and it has always been a hotel looking after guests searching for the benefits of sea air and coastal living. There were originally rooms for ladies’ maids, the kitchen was in the basement, and, of course, there were spaces to watch the waves crashing in the winter. Different owners have made their mark, starting with turning the kitchens and lower level into a nightclub in the 1950s and 60s, and adding a restaurant and bar on the first floor in the 1980s.

Richard Groome and his partner stumbled across East Beach House just before the Covid lockdowns. They wanted to create a boutique hotel by the sea and had been looking for somewhere for some time. Realising Littlehampton was lacking a boutique place was what sealed the deal, and they fell in love with East Beach House straight away. By then, it was in need of a little love, with flock wallpaper, black carpets and Paisley prints. But despite knowing this was going to be a complete refurbishment project, no one could have predicted that the morning after the removal men left, the nation would go into lockdown.

Littlehampton

Amazingly, and with a lot of hard work, Richard and his partner managed to pull off a full and fabulous refurbishment and have since gone on to win the Muddy Stilettos Best Boutique Stay in 2023, beating The Star at Alfriston and The Gallivant at Camber Sands. The inspiration behind the new look interiors came from a love of travelling the world and staying in boutique properties and the hotel has an authentic feel-good factor.

Take time to explore
