You may be looking forward to a long weekend spent cutting the grass and washing off the BBQ but if you fancy getting into the spirit of some true Sussex May Day madness, try one of these three very unique events!
Beltane Festival
Celebrate Beltane at Wild Heart Hill, Long Furlough Worthing on the 29th April from 12. Not quite a May Day event but this is a fire and feast festival with a Beltane “bringing in the May” procession, Morris dancers, drummers, storytellers and a live folk band throughout the day. You need to book via Eventbrite.
Sompting Village Morris
Head to Shoreham at 7 am on the 1st May for the crowning of the May Queen followed by a processional parade through Tarring High Street at noon. If you miss them on the 1st May, you can catch them on the 3rd May at The Spur in Slindon. This is a fantastic group of Morris dancers bursting with a sense of fun and energy.
Hastings Jack in the Green
Hastings go big this weekend with their four-day event that attracts thousands and includes live music, dancing, drummers, dancers, giants and some jolly green men (and women). The big finale is the slaying of the Jack to release the spirit of summer on West Hill.
