Who doesn’t love the saxophone? Or rather, who hasn’t secretly dreamt of being able to play the saxophone and effortlessly belt out a melancholy or uplifting tune with effortless charisma? Surely that’s not just my fantasy?
Learn the sax
If that resonates, then get yourself to the Jazz Gin & Blues festival at Loxwood Meadow in July because this year they are hosting a Sussex saxophone workshop, hosted by none other than Simon Bates. The workshop is open to musicians of all skill levels and designed to help saxophonists advance their musical abilities and gain valuable insights into the art of playing saxophone.
The legendary Simon Bates
If you don’t know him, Simon Bates is a legend in the world of jazz and in fact, in the world of music as a whole. He plays all genres and has performed around the world at such venues as the Q.E.2, the Eiffel Tower, Ronnie Scotts and the Albert Hall as well as working as Musical Director for the likes of Bette Midler, Rick Astley and Richard Shelton. Not to mention his 20 years of experience as Professor of Saxophone at the Royal Military School of Music and a large number of other distinguished achievements.
The workshop will include practical exercises that will help you develop your technical skills, improve your sound projection and tone quality, and gain an appreciation of various styles of saxophone music. Attendees will also have the opportunity to learn from Simon’s vast knowledge of jazz improvisation, musicianship skills, and practice technique. The free workshop will run from 4 pm to 5 pm.
Jazz, Gin and Blues
If you haven’t been yet, the Jazz, Gin and Blues Festival is a gloriously indulgent way to spend a lazy summer day. Set under the trees at Loxwood Meadow, it’s an eclectic mix of renowned and highly respected musicians, with some brand-new compositions being written for and performed live at the event for the first time. With an impressive line up, it’s a unique, musical event for all and any lovers of music.
And while you soak up the unique energy and creativity of the music, you can also indulge in fantastic local drinks including gin by Cabin Pressure Spirits and Madame Jennifer Distillery, beer from Langham Brewery, cider from Silly Moo and mead from Loxwood Meadworks. All to help wash down hog roast, burgers, or cream scones (vegetarian and vegan options are available too.)
