Hot, hot, hot! I hope you have managed to find a little patch of shade this week. I can’t help but think we will remember this summer for years to come, either in the same way as we remember the drought of ’76 or as the year a line was drawn and climate change hit us in the face like a blast of hot air from a furnace so that we could ignore it no more.
But love or hate the heat, August is still a lovely time to explore. In advance of something much bigger that I have planned (more anon), I headed to Slindon recently which Hilaire Belloc described as the most Sussex of all Sussex villages. It’s very pretty and has some great walking and a folly. Or, for a really thought provoking and poignant walk, what about the Chattri Memorial just north of Brighton. I was there last week and in the current burnt landscape, it felt epic.
When I started exploring Crowborough as our Town of the Month, I wasn’t really expecting to find a foodie hotspot, but … I did! For the hungry traveller, it’s well worth checking out.
Finally, I have been reflecting on how you could experience the essence of Sussex if you only have 48 hours here. In the end, I opted for 48 hours in both East and West and then an overall 48 hours in Sussex guide. It wasn’t easy as we’re such a great county with so much to see.
That’s it for now. Keep cool.
