While beavering about in Mayfield in East Sussex, we’ve stumbled across a few great local producers. And as we know most of you love Sussex cheese and wine, what better than a thoroughly Mayfield-based pairing suggestion from local vineyard, Fox and Fox.
Based just outside Mayfield, Fox and Fox are within the High Weald area and have been growing vines since 2004 and producing wine since 2009. They are a boutique producer who specialise in sparkling wines and only use their own grapes and they describe their wines “as distinctive. They are characterised by rich fruit flavours on the first sip, together with a satisfyingly long and refreshing finish”. They grow the classic sparkling wine grape combo of Pinot Noir, Pinot Meunier, Chardonnay as well as Pinot Gris and have won a number of awards for their wines.
They certainly know their wines at Fox and Fox and were kind enough to share a Sussex cheese and wine pairing suggestions to go with two of their premium and one of their house wines. Enjoy!
Meunier Blanc de Noirs 2014 with Sussex brie
An elegant Blanc de Noir, this is described as a rich, rounded fizz with notes of baked apple, blackberry, ripe plum and crumble – so great with rich creamy cheeses like the Sussex brie from Allsop and Walker. In our house, baked brie, French bread (er, I mean Sussex bread), and a glass of bubbles is the perfect casual Saturday lunch!
Essence Pure Chardonnay 2015 with goat’s cheese
Described as a bit of a “cult wine with the critics”, this is a pure un-oaked Chardonnay produced in very small quantities. It has lemony-citrus notes with a shortbread undertone meaning Golden Cross goat’s cheese is a great pairing. So think salads, starters and snacks!
Mosaic Brut 2014 with Allsop & Walker’s “Mayfield” mountain style cheese
The perfect “anytime” fizz is a 50:50 blend of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay and has enough body and richness to play happily with Allsop & Walker’s “Mayfield” mountain-style cheese.
