From Mountains to Sussex Motivational Speaker

Richard Betts shares his story with Sussex Exclusive.

You are a mountain guide, a motivational speaker and the founder of two successful businesses. Take me back to when you were a firefighter, what you learned about yourself and what the role entailed?

The fifteen years I spent as a Firefighter with West Sussex Fire & Rescue Service were truly transformative. Joining after university, I had little idea just how profoundly the role would shape not only my leadership style, but my entire approach to life and business.

In the emergency services, failure is not an option; there must always be a solution, no matter how hostile or complex the situation. Drawing on training, teamwork, belief and courage as a crew creates an unshakeable platform from which to tackle any problem. The pressure, the hazards, the risks and at times the trauma test you to your absolute core. Yet time and again, I witnessed that calm resolve and collective trust could navigate even the most dangerous of situations to a safe resolution.

Those lessons never leave you. The ability to assess a situation clearly and construct a plan of action under extreme pressure is something I draw on constantly whether leading a team on a mountain, speaking on stage, or steering a business through turbulent times. And one rule I always carry with me: have an emergency backup plan in your pocket, because situations can escalate in a heartbeat.

Firefighting didn’t just teach me a profession; it taught me who I am, and it created some lifelong friendships.

What inspired you to co-found Pied A Terre Adventures with your wife, Kirstie? Was it your love of extreme weather chasing, of mountaineering or something else?

The outdoors has always been a special to me. When I was at Seaford College, I enjoyed my cross country running, escaping with permission onto the South Downs to run. The excitement of the run, exploring new routes while being in nature and challenging myself created some deep-seated beliefs of the powers of the outdoors.

Kirstie and I have a shared love of extreme weather. Witnessing the sheer power of nature is both humbling and amazing, provided there is no damage or threat to life.  Chasing Tornadoes in the US is something we have been doing for almost 15 years.

Starting and building a business is something I love.  I had my first business at the age of 18 in my gap year.  Drawing on this inner drive to create and build, the time was right in our lives to establish Pied A Terre Adventures.  Blending business with our shared passion for the outdoors presented the ideal situation to launch our family business.

Talk me through some of your more memorable mountain expeditions when you were the Lead Guide, often taking successful entrepreneurs on adventures, pushing them out of their comfort zones.

As an International Mountain Leader, I operate throughout the year across mountain ranges worldwide, on snow-covered terrain, in remote locations, at altitude, and in conditions that would test even the most resilient of individuals. For many of my clients, successful entrepreneurs among them, these environments push them well beyond anything their boardrooms have prepared them for.

That moment when someone steps outside their comfort zone and keeps going is one of the most precious I experience as a guide. We walk as one, and the mountains have a remarkable way of stripping everything else away. Status, wealth, prejudices, none of it matters up there. What remains is simply a group of human beings on an adventure together and seeing who people truly are in those moments is something I treasure deeply.

I was privileged to be asked to guide Richard Branson, incidentally one of my role models, in the Italian Alps. It made for a fascinating dynamic. On one particularly demanding day we tackled a challenging route that truly tested us. It was a memorable experience for both, and I was honoured that Richard chose to include our day together in his book.

Another expedition that stays with me involved a CEO and good friend who became crag fast on the route to Snowdon’s summit. Paralysed by fear, he needed to trust me completely. Step by step, word by word, we moved forward together clearing the exposed cliff edge until we reached the summit and safely made our descent. It was a profound reminder that courage isn’t the absence of fear, it’s choosing to take the next step anyway.

When did you embark on motivational speaking? Having invited you to speak at my events, you are a natural. Were you professionally trained?

I have always enjoyed speaking. My earliest memory takes me back to the age of six, standing up at a school event while we were living in Africa and loving every moment of it. Whilst I have never had formal professional training as a speaker, I have learned through years of leadership that the ability to communicate effectively is one of the most powerful tools at my disposal.

What drives me is the possibility that sharing my experiences might just be the catalyst someone needs to believe in themselves, to make a decision, and ultimately to act. That prospect genuinely excites me every time I step onto a stage.

We all need someone who sees our situation from a slightly different angle; someone who truly understands how hard change can be. There are always a hundred reasons not to change, and we even stigmatise the process itself. The term “Imposter Syndrome” is thrown around constantly, often as a warning sign or a weakness.

I see it differently. When I experience those feelings associated with Imposter Syndrome, I embrace them, I congratulate myself and then I push forward. Because those feelings mean I am evolving, and evolution is simply another word for change. As human beings, we should never stop growing. If my talks help just one person take that first step towards change, then I have made a difference. And that, more than anything, is why I love motivational speaking.

Tell me about Trig Point Consulting, and how it embodies your authentic approach to leadership and of consistently delivering value to clients.

Trig Point Consulting is a pioneering, independent consultancy dedicated to helping organisations transform by harnessing the power of AI and technology to elevate processes and genuinely empower people.

The environment facing businesses today has never been more demanding. Maintaining the status quo is challenging enough, let alone achieving meaningful growth. Yet with AI rapidly maturing and becoming increasingly accessible, the opportunities for smart, well-aligned technology integration are genuinely compelling and the time to act is now.

What sets Trig Point apart is something I am deeply proud of: we do not sell hardware or software. We are not a vendor or a reseller. We are truly independent, which means every piece of guidance we offer is honest, unbiased and entirely in our clients’ best interests. That independence is everything.

Just as I guide clients through the mountains, shoulder to shoulder, step by step, we walk alongside our clients through every stage of their transformation. The bond that forms through that approach is one of trust and openness, and it is precisely that trust which unlocks the real breakthroughs. The parallels between mountain guiding and business transformation are, perhaps, closer than people might expect.

At the heart of our methodology is REALITE, our pioneering change management model, built on the Lean philosophy of Right First Time, On Time, Every Time. These are not just words, they are the foundation upon which lasting efficiency, profitability and genuine sustainability are built. And in our experience, no organisation regardless of size or sector can afford to overlook them.

The growth of Trig Point Consulting has been phenomenal. You’ve won significant contracts when competing with global brands. What’s next?

Firstly, none of what we have achieved would be possible without an exceptional team, and I am genuinely proud of every single one of them. To compete with and outperform global brands is a testament not just to our expertise, but to the trust our clients place in us. That trust is something we never take for granted.

The pace of change in AI and technology is extraordinary. Organisations that were cautiously observing from the sidelines are now actively seeking to understand how they harness these tools to transform their operations, their customer experience and their competitiveness. The window of opportunity is open, but it will not stay open forever. That is where Trig Point steps in.

Our focus now is on scaling thoughtfully and sustainably. Much like navigating a mountain in challenging conditions, growth must be managed with care, precision and an eye on the objective. We are acutely aware of the wider geopolitical landscape and its implications for business, and we factor that into every conversation we have with our clients.

One initiative I am particularly excited about is the development of our Consultancy Academy. A programme designed to bring talented apprentices into our world, nurture them, and develop the next generation of transformation specialists. Investing in people has always been at the heart of everything I do, whether on a mountainside or in a boardroom.

If you are a business leader wondering whether to embrace AI and digital transformation, my answer is simple: the summit is there you just need the right guide to help you reach it. Let’s have that conversation.
