Discover, explore and savour the best of Sussex

Stay in this Hidden West Sussex Shepherd’s Hut

If you’re looking for a West Sussex shepherd’s hut which would make a great base for exploring, you could do a lot worse than Our Back Garden at Westbourne. The coastal corner south-west of Chichester is a great area for a mini break and includes the picturesque village of Bosham (and pronounced Bozzum in good Sussex style) overlooking Chichester Harbour, Fishbourne, home to the largest Roman palace in Britain, the Witterings with their sandy beaches, deserted Thorney Island with its magnificent coastal trail, Chichester Marina, Pagham Harbour, nature reserves and more.

Bosham

And that’s all before you head slightly inland to sample the delights of historic Chichester, the South Downs, Uppark, and Stansted to name but a few of the area’s worthy destinations.

The point is, this is a part of the county that is rich in interest, history and beauty, but that also jogs along at what feels like a slower pace more suited for coastal living and exploring. It’s the perfect place for a weekend break or a longer stay and we’ve found the perfect escape pad.

The Shepherd’s Hut

Bump your way down a single-lane track as you come into Westbourne and you come to Our Back Garden. This is a family-run, rare-breed farm (with alpacas) where they’re working to save and regenerate their environment. Apart from alpacas, there are Sussex red cows, a flock of Hampshire Down sheep, fish, meadows and the River Ems. There’s also a farm shop and a delightful new al fresco dining experience called the South Coast Supper Club where you’ll enjoy superb local produce delightfully served with interesting guests for company.

And it’s here you’ll find a charmingly little shepherd’s hut overlooking the fields, which comes with its own barbeque area as well as a date night polytunnel for those colder evenings and a bird’s eye view of baby alpacas!

The hut is stylishly furnished and a great place to step away from it all, with the fresh air and outside living of a camping trip but with a whole lot more luxury to enjoy! It’s one of those off the beaten track gems that you occasionally find in a really charming location and you can find out more and book at: Our Back Garden.
