Pitts-Stop at Comestibles, Midhurst

Having been out and exploring Woolbeding on a rainy day, my co-conspirator and I headed into Midhurst for coffee and cake. Finding all the high street cafés were full (great news for Midhurst) we skirted around the back streets to Red Lion Street and dived into Comestibles Deli and Café. It was a great find.

Comestibles, Midhurst

What’s on the menu?

Lots. They have vegetarian, vegan and gluten free options. There is a hearty breakfast menu (not always available after 12 if they’re busy) which includes pastries, porridge, smoked salmon, scrambled eggs and cooked breakfast. And a great looking lunch menu with home made soup, quiche, salads, sandwiches, paninis, jacket potatoes – all with a vast choice of fillings. Oh and there was cake! Lots of cake.

We opted for the homemade soup of the day and the goat’s cheese, beetroot, walnut and carrot salad. Great size portions, great service! They were pretty busy so I couldn’t quiz them about where they get their produce but I noticed local eggs and milk, and Wiltshire ham.

And the deli?

It’s a small café with a rustic vibe and as the name suggests, it’s also stacked to the rafters with delicatessen items. We were tucked in the corner  … and couldn’t help but peruse the shelves to find something tantalising to take home. Better still, when we left, we walked around the corner and found a great little bookshop to have a rummage in! All in all, well worth getting off the main drag for our Pitts-Stop.
