The Best Sussex Fish and Chips

There are plenty of places to eat fish and chips in Sussex, and as a coastal county, you’d be surprised if there weren’t. But where are the best Sussex fish and chips? Well, although everything is subjective, we believe that Sussex fish and chips are best eaten by the Sussex sea and so here are our favourite places to indulge.

Old Town Hastings

Hastings Old Town has a fishing history that dates back centuries and it is still home to one of the largest beach-launched fishing fleets in the country. As you walk along The Stade (the name of the beach which means landing place in Saxon) you’ll see dozens of fishing boats, and if you’re there at the right time, you might even see some of them land the catch.

What better place to eat fish and chips?  And just a short walk away, along Rock-a-Nore, there are dozens of places where you can tuck into the best of the catch. Go upmarket at Webbe’s, eat inside at Maggies or grab a take away from one of the huts and head down to the beach.

Peacehaven

Peacehaven is home to a dramatic bit of coastline and an undercliff walk with two epic flights of steps, Bastion Steps and Friars Bay Steps. So grab your fish and chips from the Best Fish & Chips (that’s its name) at 149 South Coast Road, and head down to the sea. They have plenty of other things on the menu but you can’t go wrong with haddock and chips.

Shoreham

From Shoreham town centre, cross the river Adur via the Adur Ferry Bridge, cross Riverside Road and walk a short distance down Ferry Road to Middletons. Once you’ve got your fish, chips, peas and maybe a battered sausage, you can either sit along the riverside or walk down to Shoreham beach and nature reserve.

Littlehampton

Keeping watch over the river Arun, Littlehampton Harbour has a small fleet of fishing vessels which you might see landing their catch at their moorings or at the Fishing Landing Point on the river walk next to the Riverside Fish Kiosk. If you walk along the river down to the pier, you’ll spot amateur crabbers dangling their lines and see different boats coming and going.

There are a few fish and chips shops in Littlehampton, particularly on Pier Road (and what’s not to love about a restaurant called 47 Mussel Row) but our favourite is Fred’s. Grab your order, walk across the road and sit on a bench riverside and watch a watery world go by. Although look out for the seagulls who might be interested in your dinner and check out one of the fishy recipe suggestions you’ll see on the way markers by the side of the river.

East Wittering

The vast sandy beaches of West Wittering may steal the limelight but East Wittering is buzzing with eateries. The Fisherman’s Hut is right on the beach at the end of Shore Road with a lovely chap serving from the hut. Yes, it really is a hut. This is where to buy your fish (and it makes our list because it’s such a great find) but if you want to grab a traditional fish and chips to go with a little curry sauce on the side, walk up the road a little to The Boathouse and once you’ve got your order, enjoy it watching the sun set over the sea.
