Another month has flown by and we’re heading into high summer. So to help you squeeze every last drop out of the next few weeks, here’s our pick of some of the best of what’s on in August in Sussex in 2026:
Cowdray Maize Maze & Flower Picking Patch
Opens 31 July
Cowdray’s Maize Maze is back, this year with an ‘Around the World in 80 Maze’ theme. Set against the beautiful backdrop of Lawns Polo fields and Cowdray Ruins, explore the maze, complete the stamp trail and take in the scenery from the viewing bridge.

Chichester Film Festival
7 – 23 August
This year’s Festival promises an extraordinary celebration of cinema with an ambitious program featuring exclusive premieres, iconic film screenings, live events, and much more. Walter Francisco, the Festival Director, has teased a diverse and exciting line-up of themes for this year. Full detals TBC.

Rye Pirates and Smugglers Day
8 August
A day to relive the daring exploits of the high seas through an unforgettable celebration of laughter, treasure hunts and hands-on excitement for all ages. This year’s event promises to be even bigger. Proceedings begin with a proclamation from the Mayor and Town Crier before hundreds of pirates, smugglers, drummers and musicians parade through the ancient streets. Throughout the day there will be sea shanties, folk music, historical re-enactments, sword fighting, musket demonstrations and living history displays, alongside family entertainment, children’s costume competitions and street performances.
An Evening Amongst the Vines at Leonardslee
14 August
A guided stroll through scenic vineyards, where you’ll discover the craft behind award-winning English Sparkling Wines. As the evening unfolds, savour a tutored tasting of three vintages from the Leonardslee cellar, each expressing the unique character of their cool-climate terroir.

1-2, 3, 8-9 and 15-16 August
Get ready for a Medieval spectacular with jousting and a Medieval storyline that unfolds throughout the day. There will also be Medieval music, entertainment, children’s shows, workshops, food, drink and banquets, and camping.

Airbourne – Eastbourne International Airshow
13 to 16 August
The UK’s biggest free seafront airshow returns with 4 days of spectacular flying and it’s all free. Full deatils TBC.

Fontwell Park Racecourse’s Ladies Evening
28 August
Featuring an evening of thrilling racing, a prestigious Style Awards competition, a spectacular drone show and a live Take That tribute performance, the event promises an unforgettable night out for friends, families and racegoers alike.

Festival of History at Arundel Castle
29 – 31 August
Set within the stunning castle grounds, the festival invites visitors to explore more than 12,000 years of history through authentic encampments, thrilling battle re-enactments and interactive demonstrations. From prehistoric Britain to the 20th century, discover how clothing, armour, weaponry and military tactics have evolved across the centuries.

Into The Wild, Chiddinglye Estate
28 – 31 August
With workshops, art, cabaret, music and international DJs, this festival also includes wild craft artists, inspiring speakers, great food, a spa and sauna, foraging, over 200 workshops and more.

Surrealist Picnic at Farleys House and Gallery,near Hailsham
30 August
A unique annual event held at Farleys which includes live music, surreal performance and dance. Slip on your surreal costume, create your surreal picnic food and let your imagination run wild!
