Insider guides & inspiring itineraries

Our ever-popular Insider Guides explore two of Sussex’s most historic towns. Discover Midhurst, home to the magnificent Tudor ruins of Cowdray House, before travelling east to Battle, where William the Conqueror’s abbey still dominates a town shaped by the events of 1066.

To help you explore further, we’ve also created two carefully planned itineraries. Discover the award-winning Rother Wine Triangle, cycle the Forest Way, jump aboard the Spa Valley Railway and explore the wider landscapes of 1066 Country. The second heads to East Dean, combining Friston Forest, the dramatic Seven Sisters and Beachy Head with medieval churches, smugglers’ paths, historic villages and panoramic views across Pevensey Bay.

Destinations & inspiration

This edition’s featured destination is the ever-changing landscape of Chichester Harbour, where shifting tides, hidden creeks, tiny ferries and peaceful waterside paths reveal a landscape shaped by thousands of years of Sussex history. Our Autumn Almanac is packed with ideas for making the most of the season, while our popular Soundbites offer simple ways to enjoy Sussex, whether that’s finding the perfect place to switch off, discovering somewhere new or making the most of a Sunday morning.

History & heritage

Some of Sussex’s greatest treasures are hidden in plain sight. Our Hidden Worlds feature takes you inside remarkable interiors, from the medieval wall paintings of Hardham Church to the Bloomsbury artwork at Berwick Church and the delightful painted ceiling near Storrington.

We also uncover Seven Curiosities, revealing forgotten manors, mysterious tombs and little-known corners of Sussex history that reward curious explorers, while our literary heritage is celebrated in Three Pints with a Poet, following the life of Hilaire Belloc through three Sussex pubs that reflect the wit, warmth and character of one of the county’s most celebrated writers.

Stunning walks

Whether you enjoy long-distance adventures or gentle afternoon strolls, this edition has something for every walker. We introduce the Petworth Way, one of Sussex’s newest long-distance routes, linking Haslemere with Arundel through landscapes associated with Turner, Tennyson and Capability Brown. Along the way you’ll encounter Roman history, castles, vineyards, orchards and some of the South East’s finest scenery.

For those looking for something shorter, we’ve selected a collection of accessible walks including the Old Shoreham Downs Link, Bewl Water, Warnham Local Nature Reserve, the atmospheric church ruins at Bedham and the windmills of Rottingdean.

A taste of Sussex

Food is always at the heart of Sussex, and this edition celebrates the county’s outstanding produce with our seasonal Sussex menu. Enjoy Toast of Sussex Bruschetta, savour Selsey Shore Crab Linguine, and finish with An Ode to the Humble Crumble. Simple to prepare yet impressive to serve, these recipes showcase fresh local ingredients at their very best.

We also shine a spotlight on Sussex’s thriving food scene. Meet innovative producers including a local kombucha maker and Fruitology, whose freeze-dried fruit infusions transform your favourite spirit, before discovering memorable dining experiences at The Chequers at Rowhook and Terra at Tottington Manor. Whether you’re searching for exceptional local produce, leisurely lunches or inspiring new flavours, you’ll find plenty to tempt you.
