Discover, explore and savour the best of Sussex

6 Wine Recommendations by Sussex Wine Merchants

The leaves are slowly turning, the mornings are fresher and the evenings are already drawing in. Autumn is on its way, and for most of us thoughts turn to snug jumpers, long walks in the countryside and hearty, warming meals. And inevitably, nothing goes better with any of that than some perfectly chosen wines. So we were delighted to catch up recently with husband and wife due, and wine aficionados, and newish Sussex Wine Merchants, Alteus Wines, based in Crowborough. They are just launching their case of six different wines to accompany slightly chillier nights and richer foods!

Ultimate Provence Rosé: with the chance of a last minute Indian summer, there is still room for this gorgeous rosé from Provence. The Provence roses are more complex with some of them having the juices from red grapes such as Cinsault and Mourvèdre. This gives a decent body to the wine and so it can easily be enjoyed with a light pasta dish.

Viranel Viognier: this white is a lovely wine. Some Viognier wines can be very “peachy” and feel heavy, but not this one. It’s elegant, with a decent body and aromas of lemon, grapefruit and apricot. Great acidity on this wine and it will pair nicely with any fish or chicken dishes.

Kleine Zalze Vineyard selection Chenin Blanc: This is a step up from some of the Kleine Zalze’s you find in the supermarket. Specially selected grapes and a wine that has had a little time in french oak that gives it a nice roundness. It’s subtle, creamy, with ripe tropical fruits. Perfect with roast chicken.

Biferno Rosso: This Italian red is a medium-bodied, soft red made from a blend of Montepulciano and Aglianico. It’s intense and velvety with lovely blackberry notes, yet not too heavy. Perfect with a hearty pasta or pizza dish!

Spier Pinotage: South Africa is known for its Pinotage, essentially a grape variety derived from Pinot Noir and Cinsault. Spier is a beautiful winery in STELLENBOSCH, just outside Cape Town. They make some fantastic wines and this is a great example. Soft tannins and red berry fruits and will accompany an autumn bbq or grilled lamb chops.

Finally, the Ca Vittoria Appassimento from Puglia, down in the southern part of Italy. This is a full-bodied red made from a blend of Negroamaro, Merlot and Primitivo. It is soft, with plums, black cherry, vanilla and cocoa. Ideal with a roast beef dinner.
