Horsham Artists Trail

Local art speaks so loudly of the environment that inspires it, and perhaps it’s just me, but it seems to be becoming more and more important as a way to reconnect with our communities. And more and more Sussex communities seem to be embracing this and hosting their own art trails. Horsham is doing just that and the forthcoming Horsham Artists’ Trail includes 13 venues and 36 artists made up of sculptors, painters, printmakers, jewellery designers, ceramicists, up-cyclers and textile artists.

The array and diversity of talent on display is impressive and having had a sneaky look at the lineup, there is almost certainly something for all tastes. It’s a great opportunity to meet the makers and learn more about their work and a rather civilized way to spend a weekend.

Local author and buiness owner, Alice Chambers, is one of the artists taking part. She explains a little bit about her process and inspiration.

I have always been creative but I never had the confidence to paint. But I was widowed shortly before lockdown and then more or less spent three years in isolation, so I turned to painting and writing as an emotional outlet. I prefer to work in acrylic and paint abstract. I’ve never been very good at being told what to paint or how. I just find once I’ve added the first brushstroke, each painting creates itself.”

The Artists’ Trail is free and there are eight venues in Horsham, and then a further five spread across Storrington, Henfield, Mannings Heath, and Coolham with the trail taking place across two weekends –  allowing plenty of time.

Horsham Artists describe themselves as sharing “both a passion for the work we create as well as learning from one another’s practice and experience. We are a vibrant group, keen to establish strong links with our local community through our exhibitions”. Horsham Artists’ Trail takes place on the 10th and 11th and 17th and 18th June (10 am – 5 pm). You can download a map of the trail here:  www.horshamartists.org
